the letter 'N'Now in its 11th year, the West Coast Winter Music Series is planned and programmed by a dedicated group of volunteers who just happen to love music of all kinds, but classical music in particular. They are a non-profit group whose revenues are put back into paying the artists and providing travel and accomodation fees for them to perform in Tofino. .

Internationally renowned Acadian soprano, Suzie Le Blanc has established an extraordinary career specializing in Baroque and Classical music. Her thirst and curiosity for new vistas have led her to explore contemporary, French, lieder, and her own Acadian culture.  In her first appearance in Tofino she is accompanied by pianist Robert Kortgaard.

Suzie’s contribution to Acadian culture with the CDs La Mer Jolie and Tout passe and with the documentary Suzie LeBlanc : A Musical Quest, directed by Donald Winkler, along with her performances of Early Music have earned her honorary doctorates from King’s College University in Halifax and Mount Allison University in New-Brunswick.
As an actress, she played the lead character in the film Lost Song directed by Rodrigue Jean which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2008 and won the City TV Best Canadian Feature Award.
Suzie has worked with many of the world’s leading early music ensembles in concert and opera performances as well as on film and on disc.

Robert Kortgaard completed his bachelor and master's degrees at the Juilliard School in New York City. As a recipient of arts awards from the Canada Council, he continued his musical studies in Italy and England.
Mr. Kortgaard has performed as a soloist with major Canadian orchestras and has given recitals throughout Canada and the United States, as well as in England, Finland, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia, the Czech Republic and China. He is one of the country's most respected concert pianists, having appeared with most of the country¹s leading orchestras and recital societies. Mr. Kortgaard has become one of the most in-demand colleagues of Canada's most esteemed vocalists. Mr. Kortgaard is Artistic Director of the Indian River Festival on Prince Edward Island (recently nominated "Event of the Year" by the East Coast Music Awards).

An evening of music by Handel, Bach Corelli and Telemann played on period instruments by Finnish-born Flautist, Soile Stratkauskas and baroque cellist, Nathan Whittaker.  Both are active in the Early Music scene in Victoria and Seattle and have performed with major Baroque Orchestras in the US and Europe.

The Finnish-born flutist Soile Stratkauskas has recently moved to Victoria from London, England, where she played with several internationally-known period-instrument orchestras, such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Gabrieli Consort and Players. Violinist Paul Luchkow (from Vancouver), violist Steve Creswell and cellist Nathan Whittaker (from Seattle) are all members of the Vancouver-based Pacific Baroque Orchestra, and also perform with the Portland and Seattle Baroque Orchestras.

Soile Stratkauskas found her passion in the pure and eloquent sound of the wooden flute. As a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician, her performance on early flutes ranges from Bach to Tchaikovsky. Soile started her flute studies in Finland and completed her education in the UK.

Soile has played with many prominent period instrument orchestras in the UK, including the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Gabrieli Consort & Players and has toured Europe with these groups. With her chamber ensemble ‘The Four Temperaments‘ she was awarded the Leverhulme Chamber Music Junior Fellowship in 2007-2008 and has performed in various festivals including the London Handel Festival, Saintes Festival in France and Musica Antigua in Barcelona. Soile is also passionate about bringing early music to her home region, North Karelia in Finland, where she has performed as a soloist and with her group ’Les Ombres’.

Nathan Whittaker began his musical studies at the age of three and played his first public performance at age five.  He was awarded scholarships to attend The Georgia Academy of Music and The Taft School. In 2003, Mr. Whittaker graduated Cum Laude from the prestigious Indiana University School of Music with a Bachelor of Music Degree in Cello Performance and received a Masters Degree in Cello Performance. 

Mr. Whittaker has enjoyed praise for his performance as a recitalist, chamber, and orchestral musician both in the United States and Europe.  He has served as the principle cellist of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, associate principle cellist of the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra, and numerous other ensembles throughout the Midwest Recently Mr. Whittaker composed and performed a parodied transcription of J.S. Bach’s Cello Preludes with “ravishing” (NYT) soprano Linda Tsatsanis to great acclaim.

Mr. Whittaker has been teaching cello for over a decade; his students range from as young as four years old to adulthood, from beginners to advanced players. He has served as coach and assistant conductor to the Columbus Indiana Youth Orchestra. He lives with his beautiful newlywed wife Linda Tsatsanis and crazy dog, Ziggie.

Arthur Rowe, pianist, and chamber musician returns in the new year to perform an evening of concert piano.  Touring annually across North America, he has received enthusiastic reviews for his performances in New York, Cleveland, as well as Europe and New Zealand. We are pleased to welcome him back to the West Coast and Tofino.

Arthur Rowe began his professional career while still an undergraduate, at the University of Western Ontario. Renowned cellist and UWO Professor Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi invited him to play in recital tours in Canada and The United States, and soon after, Mr. Rowe was concertizing in cities across Canada in solo recitals, CBC radio recordings, and concerti. Arthur Rowe is heard frequently on radio broadcasts in both Canada and the United States, and has recorded with various artists for the Crystal, ebs, Innova, GM and Fanfare labels. In 2007, he released an all Schubert recording on the Centaur label.

A highly respected chamber musician, Mr. Rowe regularly collaborates with artists and chamber ensembles across North America. While at Indiana University, he began his long association with violinist William Preucil, Concertmaster of The Cleveland Orchestra, with whom he has concertized for almost three decades. In February of 2004 The Harrington String Quartet joined forces with Arthur Rowe and William Preucil in New York for a performance of the Chausson Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet, which was reviewed by Harris Goldsmith as a "reading that rivaled the benchmark recordings by Franzescatti/Casadesus/Pascal, and Heifetz/Sanroma/New Arts”.

Having previously held positions at The University of Iowa and The University of Western Ontario, Arthur Rowe now resides in Victoria, where he is Professor of Piano at The University of Victoria.

Van Django is an acoustic string ensemble made up of four of Canada's talented and eclectic musicians.  Inspired by the gypsy jazz made famous by the Hot Club of France in the '30's, their music has a driving and rhythmically inventive force which borrows from many musical influences. Members are: violinist Cameron Wilson, guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist/cellist Finn Manniche and bassist Brent Gubbels.

Van Django's music is punchy, driving and rhythmically inventive, combining a wealth of musical influences while maintaining their roots in the gypsy jazz made famous by the 1930's Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

Since the group’s formation in 1998, they have toured extensively in Canada as well as international forays to the USA and Europe.

The group has had repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest (DFNW) where in 2008 they shared a double bill concert with the John Jorgenson Quintet and in 2009 they opened for the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Romane and his group.

Experience this foursome in an action packed musical universe they call, “acoustic string hot jazz!”
Cameron Wilson is currently a violinist in the National Broadcast Orchestra, Van Django, Joe Trio, The Hard Rubber Orchestra and Mariachi del Sol. He is also a composer/arranger whose works have been performed by numerous symphony orchestras and ensembles and soloists across Canada and the U.S.

Budge Schachte has worked with a stellar cast of diverse artists including: play-write Thompson Highway, Tango Paradiso, Victoria Symphony, WIndsor Symphony, Shawn Hlookoff, Ache Brazil, Coco Trevisano, Jesse Zubot, Sal Ferreras, and many more...He is featured on several film soundtracks: Head In The Clouds, Eulogy, Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and recently he composed, played and recorded his first feature film soundtrack for the film, "Love And Other Dilemmas". His work as a performer, producer and composer can be found on numerous recordings, television and radio appearances.

Finn Mannicheis a versatile and passionate musician with a Music degree from UBC and a penchant for playing anything and everything, whether on guitar or cello. He plays Swing and New Music, Bach to Bacharach, Surf and other worldly sounds. He can be heard playing live and on CD with: the Armadillo String Quartet, Ensemble Symposium, the Jazzmanian Devils, Soul Crib, the Paperboys, Denzel Sinclair, 54/40, Murray McLauglin, Mae Moore and Cam Wilson’s varying orchestral extravanganzas.

Brent Gubbels has been a Vancouver based professional musician and teacher for nearly twenty years. In that time he’s worked with a number of local musicians and ensembles including the Hard Rubber Orchestra, Gypsalero, Rumba Calzada, John Reischman, the Vince Mai Project, Jesse Zubot, Dal Richards, Lee Aaron and Dee Daniels.

Since 1992, he has toured North America and Europe extensively and played a variety of international jazz and folk festivals.
